7 Best Ways To Keep Your Home Free Of Pests

Are you tired of dealing with insects, mice, or other pests entering your home? Why wait for them to invade your home when you can go on attack mode against pests in the first place?

We’ve prepared several things you can do to make the conditions of your home one that pests will avoid.

Read the full article to learn what you can do.

Trim tree branches that are touching the roof of your home.

Tree branches that touch the roof of your home can be a bridge for pests to enter your home. Pests like rodents can easily gain entry into your home, that’s why it is important to trim them regularly.

Mulch in garden beds may provide a perfect habitat for pests. Instead of mulch, use a less pest-attractive ground cover or rocks in areas that touch your foundation.

Properly seal doors and windows.

Pests like rats and mice can squeeze their way in through tiny cracks & gaps in your home. Regularly check & repair any damaged or broken windows & doors.

As soon as rips or tears are seen in your windows & doors, fix them right away. A wire panel mesh with a minimum of 200 holes per square inch can be used & can be found easily at home & hardware stores.

Inspect the outside of your house for holes, crevices & other openings where pests might enter.

Do the inspection on a regular basis. Check your house’s foundation for cracks, loose siding, broken roof shingles, and holes along power lines such as tubing, electric wires, and cable wiring.

You can use copper wire, coarse steel wool, sheet metal, or mortar to close the gaps

Expanding caulk is not recommended because certain pests can chew through it.

To keep ants out, caulk windows and make sure doors are securely locked. Termites and rodents can find it difficult to get into your home if you fill cracks in the foundation.

Properly dispose of your trash.

Garbage can attract different household pests such as ants and rodents. Yard waste may attract other pests that might see it as a shelter or a  food source.

Most people are aware that garbage at your home can attract pests such as ants, roaches, and rodents. Yard waste may attract pests who might see it as a shelter or a food source. Make sure all of your garbage cans have tight-fitting lids and sweep the cans and the area where they rest on a regular basis to prevent waste and spills that rodents can feed on. Keep yards, patios, floors, and garages free of leaf litter, plant clippings, and standing water, which can attract pests.

Wash your recyclables.

Store your recyclables with a tight-fitting lid. Some people use recycling bins with an open lid. If that is the case, thoroughly clean & rinse all your recyclables before throwing them out. A simple practice like this can keep your home pest-free. Store the bin outside your home or garage.

Keep proper lighting at your home.

Keep flying insects from buzzing around your home by replacing traditional mercury vapor lights with high-pressure sodium vapor or halogen lights. Insects are least likely to be attracted to bulbs with pink, purple or orange tints.

Consider changing the location of your lights. Preferably position your light farther away from your house on a pole. This will keep insects away from your house and by the pole. Just make sure that enough light enters the areas around your doors to keep them lit for safety.

Clean drains.

Sink and floor drain often accumulate gunk and debris that can attract pests and serve as a perfect breeding ground, especially for small flies.

Check and scrub all drains in your household on a daily basis, including those in the laundry room and basement. Baking soda and vinegar work well together to create a foaming action that flushes out clogs.

Avoid leaving food out.

Pests of all sizes, from bugs (cockroaches) to ants, fruit flies, and mice can continue infesting your home if they can easily get food from your home. Be sure to properly wipe up any crumbs or spills. They may seem tiny to you, but it’s a feast for a small creature. Store leftover food in a sealed container or in a resealable bag.

Clean your home on a regular basis.

The cleaner your house is, the less appealing it is to pests. You will constantly disturb any places where a pest might be considering building a home if you keep up with the vacuuming, mopping, and other household duties.

You’ll also pick up crumbs and other garbage that may have been a feeding source for pests. And if you clean on a daily basis, you’re more likely to notice any possible pest entry points before they become a concern.
