5 Common Crawl Space Problems To Avoid

We’ve created a list of the most common crawlspace problems to help you identify them immediately and take action to fix them

Moisture Issues

There is an outlet for ground moisture to get into your crawl space if there is exposed dirt in your crawl space. Rainfall, inadequate or inappropriate landscaping and poor drainage around the foundation cause water to seep into the ground like a sponge, allowing moisture to enter your crawl space.

Moisture from damp and muddy soil will enter your crawl space if your vapor barrier is absent or has inadequate covering.

Insects, Rodents, and Other Pests

Your crawl space can be a haven for  pests & other insects if it has holes in the foundation, damaged or missing access vents, or poorly installed doors.

They’ll make your crawl space into a comfy home once they’ve gotten inside. They’ll be able to get water easily through condensation, puddles, and other sources.

Termites, rodents, carpenter ants, powderpost beetles, stray animals, carpenter bees, snakes, spiders, crickets, moles, and dust mites are some of the most common crawl space pests.

T  ermites are the most common of these insects.  Crawl space encapsulation is an efficient method of preventing termites and other pests from entering your home.

Mold Growth

Mold and mildew thrive in crawl spaces, causing a slew of additional problems. Mold spores, if not treated, can create a variety of health concerns for you and your family, including allergies and respiratory difficulties. It can also lead to dry rot.

Keeping the moisture content low and controlling the crawl space humidity level is an excellent approach for preventing mold growth.

Musty Odors and Smells

If mold or mildew grows in your crawlspace, a musty stench will invade your home. These odors spread through wall gaps and fissures. Getting rid of mold and moisture should not only reduce musty odors but also enhance the indoor air quality in your house.

Standing Water

If your crawl space is flooded or has standing water, it might be due to heavy rain, poor drainage or landscaping around your foundation, or even a high water table. This water sometimes recedes on its own, especially after large rains, when water table levels return to normal.

If you notice white or chalky markings on your foundation walls, it’s a good sign that there’s a lot of standing water in your crawl space. Most importantly, standing water causes wet, musty, and moldy conditions in a crawl space
